The Monetary System Of Gothic?

I'm a little confused about how money works in this game.
Do the gold coins mean anything? Is ore the only way to buy things?
If it is,how do you get it?I've only found one piece at the begining, and some on Nek's body in the cave.
Also I sold of some of my junk that was worth 18?,but I didn't seem to gain any ore,but the items were gone from my inventory .
Thanks in advance for any help.

The coins are worthless. I did the same thing at first. When you find a vendor and ask him to show his wares, put the stuff you want to sell into the right column down the middle, then go to his stuff and move what you want to trade for into the left column down the middle. The total value of the left column should be equal to or less than the total value in the right column. Press enter and accept. Later when you get stuff of high value to sell, you can press alt with action to transfer ten at a time and shift with action to transfer 100 at a time.

Ok,thanks.I get the trading part. What if your just trying to sell off stuff you don't want and the trader has nothing you want or need? Can you get some ore that way?
What are some of the other ways to get ore?I want to upgrade my weapons, and get some armor, but I can't afford anything. Can I sell off unwanted things with the traders for more ore?
Thanks in advance.

If the trader has nothing that interests you then get his ore.But is most likely(in early chapters) that he hasnt enough ore to pay you back.So you have to go in each trader give him two or three stuff(for example weapons you dont need) and get some ore then go to the next trader do the same thing. You can get a lot ore and high value stuffs in chests and boxes. Also you can be trained in trophies so you can get from killed monsters wings.tonges, skins, claws, teeths which have a respectaful value and you can trade them with ore.As for an Armor you didnt say in which chapter you are....but if you dont have any armor go to the Free Mine there is a digger called Swiney talk to him tell him that you want to work and he will give you Digger's Trousers(or something like that) for FREE or you can trade those clothes for ore if you already have an armor.
Here is a list of traders in EARLY chapters:
1.Dexter(old camp) there is also another shadow/trader in the old camp
2.Cavalorn(near old camp)
3.Wolf(new camp)
4.Fortuno(sect camp)
5.the smith at the sect camp
6.there are two traders inside the old mine and a digger named Glen who sells lockpicks but you have to find a way how to sell you lockpicks
7.Modgrad(old camp/tavern in the new camp)
8.Baal Isidro (tavern in the new camp)
9.Another Baal-something at the entrance of the cave to new camp's huts

Donīt buy armour unless you have none. Armour is a status symbol. You will be offered to buy armour when you are promoted. There are only a few exceptions later in the game. Armour must be paid in ore. Obviously you should always have the best available armour, no matter how expensive it is.
Only pay with ore if thereīs no other choice. Giving the trader slightly more of his itemsī worth from your inventory is always preferable to wasting ore.
