direct 3d renderer error

I did a complete install and tried severall times but every time I try to start the game it stops and says direct 3d renderer error, lists a few things that I have no Idea what it means and then u have to exit or u cant get out. I've tried to fix it but there is nothing I have done that has accomplished anyhting- there are no web sites I can find to update my graphics card
