Actually, with a CRPG I would argue it IS about the backstab damage.

The more you do, the faster you can play the game and see the cool story.

Once you dual to a thief, yes, if using a weapon that is capable of back-stabbing.

There are some problems with fighter/thief kits. You can't evade maze and imprisonment(i.e. Gaxx&Demi Lich in Watcher's Keep). So the question is whether you are going to play solo or in party. Playing kensai/thief was most interesting for me, but the char. who is able to face all dangers in SoA&ToB on insane diff. is Cavalier armed with Defender of Easthaven as off-hand weapon. This char has Armor of Fight spell and with this weapon and Hardiness(HLA) all phys. res. are 90-100% for 2 turns. And all liches can be esily turned after 25 lvl. so you shouldh't have any problems with them. With Carsomyr or Pyrifier and some other stuff you can have your mag. res. abouth 85-95% so all magic can't harm you. You should give a try to improved Demogorgon! That was an "epic fun" for me.
The only way to play BG1&2&ToB with 1 char. as far as i know is to download the BGT(Baldur's Gate Trilogy) from TeamBG-it combines all in one-and the most important is that you can play BG1 with interface and Graphics of BG2.

Team BG can be found at www.teambg.net ... but as AFAIK you can't download the Triology there ... you need a strange Download-Programm for this ... I couldn't get it to work when I tried it some time ago.

Also you might wait to dualclass your Character until Level 13 or 16, because at Level 13 he gets a 1/2 Attack more per Round. The best "Backstab-Weapon" is the Katana.

A easier way to play BG 1 with the BG 2 Interface is BG 1 Tutu, found at
forums.fwstudios.net.

Ah yes, I forgot katanas are counted as one-handed in BG2. Seems sort of silly, but oh well.

Silly, but horribly powerful ... and traditonal in CRPGs since Wizardry VI

Also really scary looking ... either my two Katanas wielding Stalker in BG2 or my Brothers NWN-Fighter-Thief (with two Katanas) surely are a Sight.

But IRL the Katanas were used two handed. Though they are by far lighter than European Blades ... maybe it is possible to dual-wield them with a lot of Practice ? Certainly with much more Penaltys than other Combos because Katanas have really long Blades.

Katanas were USUALLY wielded in two hands... however, unless I'm mistaken, certain samurai clans wielded them in combination with a wakazahshi. The two swords were to be wielded as one and known collectively as "Daisho".

D&D loves samurai double wielding action.

Thanks to Val for the back-stabbing weapons info and to Schattenherz for the link and the good info. But I'm thinking for my kensai to stay as a kensai and not dual class him. this are my stats trough 5 minutes rerolling:
S:18/24
D:18
C:18
I:10
W:11
CH:12 but right now in 18 because of a ring (or something like that )

The problem with the Kensai is that he can't wear ANY armor, bracers etc. and it is very bad leter in the game so consider either dualclassing to thief for "Use anu items"or choose another class-Archer. A. has the same bonuses as Kensai regarding bows and crossbows and the penalties are lighter. You won't be able to backstab but the most important you will stand alive and take them from safe distance. My Archer(Gun-Man) was like storm with "Taralash" and Greater Whirlwind Attack. You can't soloing with Archer but he is powerful party char. Again, the question is whether you're going to play solo or in party, on insane diff. or normal rules??

I have had some problems with Baldur's Gate Trology from Team BG too but now it's OK. Follow the link http://www.teambg.net/forum/?board=94 There is a mess with the comand line in DOS mode but it worth the efforts.
There is another BG link http://weidu.org/main.html and if you choose to play with katanas d/l some staff from here. There is an upgrade for "Celestial Fury" and after VERY VERY HARD battle you can loot another cool blade from the body of dead samurai.

I have problems chosing my main character and yes I will be traveling with a party. I also don't like the kensai that much because of the armor class, I know he does a lot of damage but in exchange he gets lots of damage too. I don't know what to do really. Rangers don't get to much of my attention though.

If I remember right, there is an armor that a kensai can wear. I think it's Valygar's armor. Not sure though.
