It is not about it being historically accurate even if it does resemble medival europe. It is about how this game was produced ... |

On a side note Gothic 2 is similar to Baldurs Gate, not in looks BG was much more colourful than Gothic 2's Grittiness bu ... |

best thing to do is train up all your combat related stats before becoming a novice.
Why? Because after becoming a novice all str (maybe dex) and combat skills double in cost.

Just become an apprentice and citizen of the town and then just join the milita.
