All that effort beefing up my character (lev43) and i need'nt have bothered...it was so easy and it was a lame ending to boot.

To your first question
Go into the swamp and talk to two of the named characters (at opposite ends of the swamp)one gives it for free,but the other asks you to do a little quest.
