I think, it opens a tower near Matteo's house.
There are 6 towers in the city:
2 at the south gate, 2 at the east gate, 1 near Thorben's house and 1 near Matteo's house. |

Maybe we will find the answers in the Gothic 3. I've finished G2 and all I can tell you now, is that the whole story seems to be more complicated (and also Xardas is very complicated charakter ).

You need to get into a castle in the Valley of mines and there you need to get a proof from commander Garond (and of course, it's not so easy .
So continue down the path to the castle. |

ad 1: When you join new camp, you can be water mage or mercenary. I didn't play as a mage, so I don't know what are you supposed to do to become water mage, but try to ask Cronos.
