The quest will be completed later in the game. It's part of one of the main quests, so you can't miss it.

The Gate is a bit odd, you have to stand in the exact right position to activate it, try to stand where the Black Mage did.

Brutus is one of the Militiamen of the Paladin Stronghold in the Valley of Mines. He is the guy responsible for "questioning" the prisoners.
