I have had 2 crashes while playing this game. Both times I had zonealarm and net connection on. Now I have played over 20 hours with no other programs running and had zero crashes.

I would say no need to upgrade system just for gaming. I have been able to play all recent game demos (fps games) well enough (even online) after I have tweaked the game (all particle effects off etc) ...
