Gamezone have scored an interview with Jan Beuck, Managing Director of master creating about Restricted Access. Here's a snip:
Q: What kind of game engine is used? Does this title bring anything new or different to the genre technologically speaking? Does the player interface sport anything new? Games are using variations of 'bullet time' or incorporating the rag-doll effect. What elements does Restricted Area have that will likely appeal to game players?
Jan: There's indeed some kind of “bullet time” – a skill called “Reaction”. Once “Reaction” is activated the entire world becomes slower but you retain your speed.
The game takes advantage of the IRIS engine, the fastest and most powerful engine ever written for an isometric game, which took over two years to create and which has been created especially for Restricted Area. This results in very high frame rates and extremly smooth scolling and gives us the possibility to use innumerable visual effects, for example dynamical lights and shadows, rain, fog, smoke, dust, fire, water, explosions and reflections.
