Being a Wing Commander veteran from the very first game on, I was looking forward to this, even though I nevel play online games. And, as expected, the online aspect ruins everything. It was a great game, if it offered a story and a good single player mode. |

I have played this game since beta of november 2001. This game has many flaws. First of all the battles are boring. There's almost nothing to do there except fire your weapon a couple of times, you almost don't even have to move around. The graphics are good, but I don't really like the ships models. The graphics of your ship do not change much when you buy new equipment. You don't really see other people in space because you'll always be traveling at warp speed during which you can't do anything except chat and look at the view passing by. Almost no one groups, everyone solos in E&B. If you liked EverQuest where you can group and play for hours with people, than you will get bored with E&B.
In E&B, travelling is actually in two dimensions. You can go up and down, but not that much. The "zones" are flat, the maps are not 3D. But this is not a space sim, so I guess it's ok.
This game is not really interesting. I'll wait for Eve Online for an online space game. |

Good MMORPG, which in time will become great. Unfortunatly it is not a space sim, and it's basically on a flat plane, but for an RPG set in space it is fine. |

Good: Graphiques, leveling, fighting,
Bug: Chating
Bad: Grouping,identification,
Very hard to chat with a person you see in the base, every body is running or busy trading.
Can't tell what race the other ship is if you don't have a good 200 hours played (even then).

Super graphics get a 10,but as a 4 year vet of MMoRPGs the rest of the game is mediocre. If you like space travel and exploration this could be your MMoRPG for now.But if you where looking for the next great MMoRPG then don't stop at this one.
Of the current MMoRPGs available I will put this one at the 3rd best behind DAoC and AO(note I am not saying these are great, just best of currently whats available in this fledgling genre).

Having played nearly every mmog on the market since 1995, and now playing E&B daily since release, the obvious GLARING fault with it is:
there's nothing "going on" in the universe - there's no point to any of the activities.
You fly around, chat, shoot some mobs, gain some levels, make some money, do some missions... all so that you can... do what? Nothing. Except more of the same. Talk about a treadmill.
There's nothing beyond those isolated activities, no =Point= or =Goal= to the gameworld. No over-arching Mystery or Intrigue or Epic Saga or Good-vs-Evil Conflict to get involved with. Nothing. Nothing is going on in the universe.
E&B is not so much a "game" (let alone a "Role Playing Game"), as it is a casual diversion, where 2000 players are "alone together" just kind of puttering around doing random, pointless, isolated, unrelated "stuff" over and over again.

Not the best, but far from the worst. It takes some of the best aspects of EQ, UO and DaOC and combines them into a space-format game.
I really enjoy it! |

Very enjoyable game. Unfortunately I felt the RPGdot review was inaccurate in a few places, so I wanted to correct them here. One, you CAN set your weapons to auto-fire... combat does not need to be a "button-pounding fest that last for around 30 seconds". There are also numerous special abilities, tactics, and devices that can greatly effect the outcome of a battle. It sounds to me like there was not enough actual gaming experience behind whoever wrote the combat review section. Secondly, the death penalty in this game is a beautiful thing. It helps keep casual players from getting frustrated because they can simply log off and come back later, but provides considerable sting to folks who are "powergaming" and feel the need to play through it. It's one of the best penalty systems I've yet experienced in an MMORPG. Overall? I find the game enjoyable and immersive. When taken for what it is... an RPG (NOT a sim) that is set in space, it comes across very well. My only real complaint would have to be the interface, which was also mentioned in the review. |

So far the badest MMORPG i've ever seen.
I have played UO from the second year on. It becomes bad when "Candyland" was released. Compared to the UO "Candyland", E&B is a whole "Candyempire".
No collission detection, no fear for death, no PvP, simplest fighting system ever seen, lack of classes, unbalanced experience system, lack of communication between players, you have hours to spend in warp where you can do nothing.
Not more than 50%. |

The combat in this game is unlike most space combat games for a start its a very slow uninteresting process. To kill something just park your space ship infront of your target activate your weapons and wait. On the plus side the slow combat means that even 56k modem uses can play this game without getting lag.
The current problem with E&B is that you level very fast which is a problem because there isn't much to do at high levels.
The live team are going to need to put a lot of work into the high level game if they want to keep their current customers. |
