Altre's Comic: Lambs to the Slaughter Altre, 2004-04-14
A constant in most Mmorpg games is the level mill. Publishers now claim that they've moved onto a new system based on skills. Of course, this new system could be more accurately referred to as "The Level Mill Part 2: Revenge of the Son." Traditionally, most of this drudgery of advancement involves killing thousands of Monsters. Have we ever given much thought about those we've lain waste to in the search of more xp? Could there be more to what we initially see?
That Blort you just killed. Did you know anything about him, or was it a her? Maybe they're unisex. Yes, you understand that at level 15 Blorts give 150xp, drop meat, hide, and very occasionally, a +6 Dexterety Ring or a Belt of the Mad Goth. Think about that just a bit. What is a small, lumpy creature like that doing with belts and rings? You see, the Blorts were once a quaint tribal group with moderately advanced technology.
They lived in a sleepy little valley and generally led good lives. That is, until you and your friends showed up. Within short order half the village was dead and the rest had been scattered to the wind. All for their +6 Dexterity Rings. If you had asked the Blorts, they would have just made you a +6 dexterity ring. Except you were too primitive to understand the psychic signals they were sending as you burned their children alive with Fireballs.
Out in the middle of nowhere you see it. The proverbial rare, one of a kind mob. Its creature type, the Jutes, don't appear anywhere near this zone. Gleefully you rush in, cut it's head off, and take the loot. Again, you don't seem to stop to ask the right questions. This creature you killed, this being, was the Martin Luther King of his species. The Jutes have several levels to their society, with an upper class, and a slave class. The slaves recently rose up against their opressors, and what followed was a painfully brutal war between the classes. This Jute, let's call him Fred, figured out a way to stop all the violence. A brilliant idea that would please the upper class, and free the slaves at the same time. Fred was rushing on his way to stop the penultimate battle between the slaves and the upper class. Except, you killed Fred before he got to the site of the final reconing. Understand this: everyone died. All the Jutes, slave and upper class alike, and it's all your fault.
The next time you decide to paint the forest with the blood of the local innocent tribes, think. What's going on here? Is this morally right? Do these creatures not have a right to live as much as you do? If you're playing an evil character on the other hand, I suppose you can ignore any nagging stories you might hear about sentience or morals. Make sure to use extra pointy bits for emphasis as you torture the Blorts.
