It's coming again, It's coming again. It's... - Slow News Day has posted the third part of their series of interviews with 11 demiurgs of game programming, entitled "The future of Online Gaming". This time, they asked how close we are to market saturation (I could ask our very own Garrett about that *g*). Here's once again the answer from Richard Garriott:
Far. The online games business is growing world wide at over 100% per year. Sure there are lots of "me too" MMP RPG's flopping out on the market, but most are ill conceived, under funded, inexperienced young upstarts. Which is not to say that many didn't have some brilliant ideas within them, because many do. But most, did not have a good balance of fresh ideas matched with online experience. Everyone is exited about the brave new genre of online MMP's, so it's understandable why everyone is gunning for this category. The next few years we will see many, many flops. But we will also see some great new ideas tested and huge growth in this market segment. Personally, I'm thrilled to be a part of this new wave of innovation once again, just like the early days. |
