Internal Affairs: A look behind the scenes

Preparations for the move to the new server continue. We have implemented some additional security measures on the new server, as well as updates to the kernel and programs essential to run our network. The RAM update has happened, now we are putting in another HD to have our daily backups on the second drive - just in case something goes VERY wrong.

Myrthos is working on a better integration between the news site and the forums. We'll drop our seperate news comments, for example, and integrate them into the forums. The goal is to have site and forums act together in order to make it easier for you. At the same time, Myrthos is revamping our database code in order to make the access to the records faster and less CPU- and memory intense. The new CPU and the additional memory on the new server will help, but looking at our growth rates, we must be prepared for even higher visitor numbers and pageviews.

We are also working on a new design, but this is in the very early stages at the time being. The problem we see is that we have so many infos buried in the site that only few are really known to the casual visitor. On the other hand, our site has to remain clearly structured (even better than now). To find a good compromise between accessibility and usability is our goal.

We expect to move the site after christmas and before New Year's Eve, when there are less visitors. Expect an update on the situation soon.
