RPGVault has published the fifth Black Moon Chronicles Development Diary. Eric Langlois, Lead Programmer at Vircom, talks about the WOW engine they are using:
We had a very short period of time to make WOW come to reality. We only had eight months to do it and this quickly became a major concern for the production team. We didn't only have the graphic engine to consider, but all the other aspects of the game like the tools used by the art and the design departments, tools that support the production and distribution of the game and the game itself (the server, the networking sub-system, the AI, etc.)
We were going to make an MMORPG and this type of game has a very special feature: they usually have a longer lifespan than non-MMORPGs because the game is never over and can be updated as often as desired. The fact that it can be upgraded from distance helps keeping the players interested. So we needed a graphic engine that would be easy to maintain, upgrade and expand. |
