The second part of Online Worlds Roundtable #8 is now up at RPG Vault. Half a dozen more MMO developers lend their thoughts about gameworld design like these ones from Taylor Daynes, Lead Designer, Pirates of the Burning Sea:In a sandbox gameworld, the designers give the players a set of toys and tools and turn them loose to make their own fun. In place of a static dungeon, there is instead a system of interaction between players that can be accessed at any time, experienced in a variety of ways, and that is changed by player participation. Like the toys and tools of a child's sandbox, this sort of gameworld provides an ever-changing and unpredictable experience at the cost of inconsistent entertainment value and requiring substantial ongoing tuning and tweaking. |
