RPGDot 2003 Awards: Best Sound in an RPG
RPGDot Team, 2004-01-07

The last couple of weeks you could vote for the best RPGs and MMORPGs that have been released in 2003. Not us but you the player decide who receives the RPGDot 2003 Awards in the various categories. We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games of 2003.

Best Sound in an RPG

The sound and music in a game can make a big difference. When not done correctly sound and music in games tend to get annoying, yet when done properly it adds to the gameplay experience while playing and can draw you deeper into the game. There is a clear winner.

The winner: Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic
Take one part inspiration from John Williams' memorable Star Wars themes and add the talents of legendary game music composer Jeremy Soule and you have a recipe for a stirring soundtrack. Yet it's the fully voiced dialogue that most players were probably thinking of when they voted KotOR into first place for Best RPG Sound. KotOR has some excellent voice talent that creates real personalities from slightly arrogant Jedi to evil droids. Add authentic Star Wars sound effects like lightsabers and ships cannons and its not surprising KotOR scored well.

Runner Up: Gothic 2
The first Gothic game benefited from unobtrusive, interactive music adapting to in-game happenings, supplemented by dramatic scores for cut-scenes and realistic ambient sounds. So does Gothic II. The 'Gladiator'-inspired interactive soundtrack, the game's haunting ambience in the forests and caves, the townsfolk's incessant background chatter, convincing creature sounds and the sounds of the sea in the harbor enhance the game's unique atmosphere, thus managing to secure a second place in the 'Best Sound' category.

Second Runner Up: Morrowind - Bloodmoon
Some new and nice sounds have found their way into Morrowind: Bloodmoon. They all add to the atmosphere of a truly atmospheric game (at least it is for most who have played it). And if this isn't enough for you, there are great fan-made sound enhancement packs ready for download on fan sites, making your gaming experience even more worthwhile.
