A new article (Titled: Charting the Future in Service of the Gamer – or – Why I Hate my Car) up on Stratics examines the old service vs. product argument again. The article is by Dave Cerra, CEO of Sojourn, and it's pretty insightful.I’m forced to admit to myself that I’m about to begin attacking my own industry, albeit in what I hope is a productive way. I am concerned that, despite my argument last month that the potential profit margins involved with the development of MMOs is a positive driving force early in the genre’s growth cycle, our industry is already utilizing principles of market growth that will ultimately undermine the potential of the genre as a whole. MMOs can be the ultimate gaming experience, but from a business perspective, it’s important that we keep in mind that developers are not only selling the gamer a product: they’re selling a service. |
