There's a nice article about cheat prevention in Warcraft 3 at warcraft3.net - having a closer look at what Blizzard will do to prevent cheating in this upcoming game. Here's a bit:
Another concern about cheating is a carryover from the StarCraft ladder: the "win trading" tactic. This cheat involves Player A setting up an account to take a fall for their friend, Player B. The loss that Player A takes, of course, gives Player B a point in the victory column, raising his ladder ranking. If Players A and B then reverse roles - wash, rinse, and repeat - they can nudge each other up the ladder and never play a legitimate game.
The ladder for WarCraft III will be completely revamped in ways that have not yet been fully revealed. We do know, however, that the ladder set-up for the new game will disallow "win trading" because all ladder games will be randomly arranged. That's right, you will not be able to choose your opponent in ladder games. Rather, when you wish to play a ladder game, the system will select a player of approximate equal ranking and will establish the player match-up. Non-ladder games will still be arranged individually, but for instances when the record matters, the match-ups will be random and between players of the same approximate ability.
In speculating how this random match-up system might affect team ladder play - since Blizzard has stated there will most likely be Team Ladders - it may be that teams will establish a team ladder ranking which is then used to create a match against another, randomly-selected team. |
