German Gamestar is reporting that Bertelsmann is interested in entering the gaming sector (according to the company's CEO Gunter Thielen who was apparently interviewed by a major German newspaper).
It seems like the media giant is currently looking for a partner and/or targets for acquisition. It is rumored that Bertelsmann might even go as far as acquiring Electronic Arts.
The article states that Electronic Arts seems like a likely target because of the licencing of sound tracks. The Bertelsmann Media Group (BMG), a division of Bertelsmann, could easily provide most licences.
Bertelsmann has already attempted to enter the gaming business in the mid 90s when they created the Red Balloon label (that was working on a PC version of the Amiga classic 'Ambermoon'... the game was never finished though and Bertelsmann shut down all its gaming activities after a short time). It remains to be seen what exactly Bertelsmann is going to do this time around. An acquisition of EA would surely be quite spectacular. |
