Some very positive first impressions from Icewind Dale 2 have been posted at Gaming Age (review following soon). Here's a snippet:
What makes me so happy and terrifies me at the same time is that early on in Icewind Dale II the spell casters are incredibly intelligent and unpredictable. Now they use the small stuff and the big stuff, and you usually don't see patterns either. For example, when an enemy caster attacks with some melee units, they buff their small army, then cast spells to essentially de-buff your party, and THEN cast protection/offensive spells. Of course I have seen a caster just run in, cast hold person on my Thief/Archer and then start running offensive spells through my formation. If the casters are this good in Chapter 1, I will no doubt wet my pants when facing the late game magic-using enemies.
