While Bethesda makes waves with Fallout 3, one of the games in their publishing portfolio moves forward. Bethsoft producer Dennis Cheng speaks to eToychest about 'Call of Cthulhu':The general feeling behind the Cthulhu mythos is one of overwhelming despair and hopelessness, and our inability, in the end, to prevail against the various slumbering horrors closing in on us. What have the writers and developers done to preserve this feeling of being completely outmatched by the forces standing against the player?
Right off the bat, the opening cut-scene shows your character trying to hang himself in an asylum. So from the get-go, the player is going to realize that your character doesn't come out of this experience unscathed. We try very hard to really recreate the sense of oppression and hopelessness that is typically found in the Lovecraft stories. There are a lot of times where your main character, Jack Walters, is so outmatched, he has no choice but to run. Of course, there is also our sanity system which will cleary demostrate the precarious nature of Jack's fragile mind throughout the game. |
