Earlier this week, a blogger doing her Master's thesis on MMORPGs wondered aloud whether MMORPGs are really "games" versus just being a new platform for human interaction. MMOG designer Raph Koster nearly immediately picked up on it, and argued that no, they aren't. A long discussion ensued on his blog. Personally? I only got into MMORPGs because I was sick of waiting for Arx Fatalis 2, Gothic 3, and Elder Scrolls 4 to come out. WoW, GW, EQ, CoV, and the others I've tried sure as hell felt like games to me.
Well, I’ll give an answer.
No, of course not.
They’re a technology that simulates space virtually, and supports incarnation within that space via proxies that we call avatars.
The beautiful thing about space is that it can have many things inside of it. Such as buildings, people, and yes, even games.
