Two days ago I talked a little about why we don't see an Elite 4 (for those born after the golden age of computer games - Elite was a free form space adventure where you were able to visit millions of systems, trade, fight, mine - and all of this on one or two floppies). Our reader Lanael pointed me to a site where info about Elite IV could be found (actually, there is not much info on it but that Elite production "thinks about doing it, but hasn't enough funds").
But actually I found something very interesting following the links from there. The latest Elite (Frontiers: First Encounters) was released app. 9 years ago, and although I still own the game, I was unable to run it under Windows ever since (it is pure DOS, and I am far too lazy to revert the file system of my computer, make a boot disk and install those ancient drivers.
Now, if you want to try out the game that glued me to the computer for days many years ago (despite its initial bugginess), you can now run it on today's machines following some easy steps: First, get the shareware version of FFE from Elite club. Then, grab the FFE manual (you might need a converter to convert it from Word Perfect to another format). Install the game, and get JJFFE, a program that allows you to run FFE under Windows (and it even enhances the game and takes out some annoying bugs). All in all, it's less than 5 MB to download. Once you started the game, press CTRL-F12 to make it run full screen, and you are ready for a journey into the future and into the past alike.
Just one more hint for FFE: If you press escape after the opening movie, you'll start at the defaul localtion. Keys 1-3 bring you to new starting systems with different ships.
Graphics are awful when compared with what we see on the computers nowadays, but gameplay is still fun, and the freedom you have in the game is just breathtaking. Enjoy it, even if it is only for a little nostalgia :-). |
