Glide Underground's Michael Ahlf brings to us his highly enthusiastic review re The Adventure Company's Return to Mysterious Island, which earns a 4.5 star overall rating...

Final Breakdown

Gameplay:
The gameplay is superb, with very few pixel hunts and missed items to deal with.

Graphics:
The graphics are beautifully pre-rendered in most respects, and do amazing things with the game's modest hardware requirements. Every scene isn't just a scene, it's a work of art, evoking the memory of the places in Jules Verne's novel.

Sound and Music:
The voice acting (what there is of it) is well done, and the environmental sounds are spot-on. The game's music is also well done, managing to set a beautiful mood in the game without being intrusive.

Difficulty:
While the game's not hard to play, the variety of solutions in each challenge more than make up for it; it's well worth playing the game a second or third time to find all the solutions you didn't get the first time.

Controls and Interface:
The brilliant construction mechanic in the game, allowing players to create the required tools from parts rather than simply handing them over, is amazingly simple to use and crucial to the game's enjoyability.

Overall:
If you've read the novel, great. If you haven't, don't worry - you'll catch on. Either way, this is absolutely a game worth owning.
