Overview of Aleroth

Lanilor
North of Mardaneus' house is Lanilor's house. Lanilor is grateful of course, but that does not include allowing you to steal. But as long as nobody sees it, nobody will know. So make sure that you do not take anything when Lanilor is watching you. He will move around, so wait until he moved out of sight before you clean out his place.
You will find some weapons and gold there and several books that will shed some more light on the races and historic events.

Lanilor's Garden

Left of Lanilor's house is his garden. The garden has a lot of herbs, so if you want to become an alchemist then you might find here what you need. In the center of the garden are some strange flowers named Durdanae. You can't do anything with them yet, but just mark the spot where you found them as you'll need to get back here later on.

Otho
To the north of Lanilor you can find the house of Otho, a dwarf with an attitude. He will start out as being neutral to you, but if you don't be careful then that will not stay for long. Talk to Otho an learn about the soldier Verlat, who he is trying to heal and Goemoe, who is healing another soldier.
You will learn that Goemoe has a shrine that can create healing gems. However the shrine has lost contact with 'The Source' and it has no power left to generate the two gems required to heal both soldiers. It can however create one gem. So Otho and Goemoe are in a dilemma, they have sworn not to take a life so they can not decide which soldier should live and which should die. And of course you see this as an opportunity to solve this issue.

You can explore Otho's house, but be sure not to take anything as long as he is there, but read up on the books if you like and have a chat with the soldier. There are also two skeletons in the room, which you can touch. However if you touch the skeleton named Ladivlak, it will fall apart and that will upset Otho very much. If you don't care, then have a little bit of fun with the poor dwarf. If not..... well then don't :)
It's save to click on the other skeleton though.

In the northwest is Otho's garden, full with vegetables that you can eat. Besides that, also some pigs are walking around. You can kill the pigs if you please, but again it will not make Otho a happy man.

An Abandoned House
Walking to the east from Otho's house, you will find at the northern outskirts of Aleroth an abandoned house. The door is open so you can just walk in. Inside there does not seems to be much of interest, with the exception of a mirror. But if you look closely then you'll find a book between the left hand wall and one of the packages. Take the book out and read it carefully as it contains valuable information about the mirror. Just keep in mind what Otho just told you while you are reading.
After you read up about it, move the packages and to your surprise you'll find a legging there that will give you some extra protection. That shows you that moving stuff around can be really rewarding.

The Graveyard
At the northeast of Aleroth a small graveyard exists. Make sure to read all the tombstones as some are very funny and two in particular even contain some information. Well from the others you get to know there is a plague and that counts as information also actually.

The graveyard

Anyway, from Jake's headstone you'll learn that he never liked flowers very much. Right next to him lies his wife and apparently there was not a lot of love lost between the two of them. Behind the flowerpot there is a key, take that key. Errr.... flowers??? Yes flowers!!

If you haven't figured it out yet then you could move the flowers to Jakes grave. This will make the dead Jake so mad with you that he rises from his grave and starts to attack you. Now before you do that, you should be aware that jake is not a sissy. He is actually very strong, so this is something you should wait for until you leveled up enough. But it is definitely something worth doing as it will give you even more fun later on in the game.

Jake's House
South of the graveyard is Jake's house. It's locked and you'll need the key for it you found behind the flowers on the graveyard. On first sight there seems to be nothing there, but if you go to the chamber on the right and move the packages then you'll discover a hatch, leading to the cellar below the house.
When you explore the cellar, you will find a small room there with an iron gate and a large vase in it. When you open the gate and enter the small room, Jake rises again (or for the first time). He is just as strong as he was at the graveyard, so again if you just started out then you might consider waiting a bit, the actual treasures to be found in the vase are not really worth it.

Another Abandoned House
The door of the house at the far northeast of Aleroth is closed. But apparently the previous visitors only had one key and they shared it by putting it in the barrel, just next to the door.
Inside you'll find a cudgel and a hatch leading to a cellar below the house, so more explorations to do.

Fenwytus The Shrine
Moving south from the abandoned house will bring you to the shrine. You might find Goemoe here and then again you might not as he is moving back and forth between his house and the shrine. Talk to the shrine and basically hear the same information about the ability to produce one gem only as you also heard from Otho. Then ask to be healed and the shrine generously gives you it's last gem.

Goemoe
South of the shrine is Goemoe's house and garden. Goemoe is a lizard, an outcast from his people who rather became a healer. He is trying to heal the soldier named Simon and can tell you the same story as Otho about their dilemma.
Explore the house a bit and take what you want (as long as he doesn't see you of course).

Healing both soldiers
I assume you remember what you've read in the book about magic mirrors, but if you don't then go to the southeast of Goemoe's house and find the shallow water. Then save! You never know if you are doing something wrong (like being at the wrong water) and you loose the mirror. The mirror should disappear. When it does throw in the gem and it should almost instantly double into two gems. If not then check if you are at the right water from the screenshot and try again.

First there is nothing And then there are two gems

From here it should be clear what you should do with the gems. In order to give it to the soldiers you have to talk to them and you then get the option to heal them. If you do that, you not only get the experience points, but also one reputation point per healed soldier. After you've done that Otho is a bit nicer to you also :-)
In addition you can get a couple of minor healing potions from Goemoe as a reward for healing both of the soldiers as well.

George
George is the local shopkeeper, when you enter his shop you experience a conversation between him and someone else. Listen carefully to what they say to each other as it is valuable information. When the other, vampire-like, person leaves he addresses you and you can respond in any way you want. Then enter the shop and talk to George. He will tell you that he would like to have a plant named Durdanae and that it can be found in Lanilor's garden. Tell him that you don't know what one looks like and he will walk to another room. Once he is there, you can rob the place practically :). Take the key which is lying there, it opens the chest next to the counter and also take the armor and the weapons. Then go to the other room to look at the plant.

When you've done looking at the plant, move the pillow that is lying on the floor. Underneath it is a key, that opens the chest in the same room. The door however can not be opened. Strangely enough George is just standing there watching you do it, without making a remark.

When you're done go back to Lanilor's garden and take the plant. Immediately Otho appears that will tell you that the plant belongs to Lanilor, tell him you're sorry and ask him what's the big deal and you'll learn that the plant is actually a highly addictive drug. This will cause Otho to think a little bit less high of you however. So maybe you should first ask Lanilor if it is allowed to take the plants. As you just saved him from a cold death, he will give you his ok. In that case taking the plant will not cause Otho to show up.

When you have the plant go to George and give it to him, which will make him happy and positively influences the prices you have to pay at the shop.
