again, i don't love AD&D rules on PC, but the evolution from BG1, the wide exploration area, the chance of love story evolve it. Got the impression of a more linear plot. |

While this game is bigger, better, and better-looking than the original, I still feel something lacking: immersion. The way the storyline and sidequests are presented just screams "ARTIFICIAL", and this is a big downer for me. Especially all the stoopid sidequests that people ask you to do got real annoying, real fast.
If you're looking for the biggest isometric Forgotten Realms CRPG around, however, this is the game you'll want to get. |

Hands down, this was the best game I've played in almost a decade. The story was incredible. The gameplay, especially the dungeon crawls and combat made the game hard to put down. The voice acting (especially by the villian Jon Irenicus played by excellent actor David Warner) was very well done.
When you add in the fact that you can carry over your character from the first Baldur's Gate, and its expansion and to its inevitable conclusion in Throne of Bhaal (the BG2 expansion), it is a fantasy journey well worth taking (and more then once as well). |

The first half of the game gets a 10 - it is truly incredible. I figure I spent almost 1/2 my time just playing in the first two chapters, there is that much to do and so many side quests. The second half of the game though gets a 4. By the end of the game I was totally frustrated with the repetative fights against mage NPCs. Fights vs. high level wizards/liches had to be the worst part of the game due to the huge number of protection spells and the complex set of spells needed to remove the protections. |

I still play this one today. Although well done, I wish it would of stuck with some of the features found in BG 1. Like the various maps to explore, and hidden areas. Over all this has to be right up with the top 5 of all times. |

Great game, nice story, very long. Using an aging engine, Bioware still manages to turn out a very good game. I liked Throne of Bhaal better though, because of the great special high level abilities. Reason this game did not recieve a 10 is because some parts are not so memorable. |

In many ways this game improved on the original, but despite all the advances and epic storyline, I enjoyed many aspects of the original (that others probably found tedious) such as wandering randomly around the countryside. The sequel also allowed its storyline to get out of control and simultaneously introduced too many powerful skills and items. This game could have been dragged across two more sequels with each sequel advancing the character only ten levels or less at a time. |

The CRPG that I have played the most.
The game with the mopst replayability ever.
I have tried many different classes and many different party combination, and I'm still discovering some new things after almost 2 years of playing the game.
Love the story (espescialy the part in the Drow city).
Love the NPCs (espescialy Viconia).
Love the idea of the Strongholds.
The music is not bad, but it's not great either.
Although not perfect, it is a very good game.

Baldur's Gate 2 is a sequel that pretty much failed in everything its predecessor did correct. BG1 recreated the Sword Coast and the city of Baldur's Gate in a way that brought the forgotten Realms to life. They took a part of Faerun and made it real and then put a story and a plot on top of it and allowed the player to explore the world in a semi-nonlinear way. The story for BG1 was quite mysterious and had a large number of CNPC's that allowed for a plethra of different party combinations. Baldurs Gate 2, on the other hand, had none of this. The game was longer, but very linear. There were more quest, but too many, to the point that they actually started hindering the story. The NPC's had personalities now, but there were less of them, and created for a weird multipersonality effect that did not work well with the kind of game they were trying to create. For instance I could have a lawful character break the law, and then hear him preach how he is so righteous. The story and twist were pretty much obvious from the onset. The battles were less fun, I think I spent the majority of time reloading endless battles against mages that were pretty much invulnerable. The flame that was lit with BG1 was definately put out with BG2. Like My pappy used to say if it aint broke don't fix it.:( |

I really liked the newness, freedom and inosence of BG1, but the tactical combat of BG2 won me over making most of the other titles on this list look pretty lame in that particular respect.
BG2 as an overall package is just perfectly rounded. Reasonable story, characters, depth, combat, replayability, value for money, handcrafted gfx. |

i love this game. anyone that dissagrees is a moron. The guys at black isle planned this series out so well its amazing. Its an amazing story. Yes at times you do some pointless dungeon hack bullshit, but oh who cares, theres always a reward at the end. The voice acting is amazing. The items are insane, the NPCs kick ass (esspecially Jan, Edwin, funny wise) and the romances are a nice bonus. The story is epic ,not torment epic but hey id give torment a rating of 8000000. The ending is kinda disapointing, but still cool, and plus ToB is the real end. READ MY TROMENT REVIEW..ITS THE REALLY LONG ONE |

While I adore Gothic more than BG2. It is just as fun as it can be. An amazing story and I simply didn't feel any uncomfort while playing this game. It deserves 10. |

In can't tell you how many RPGs I've played through that bored me to death by the time I was half through. Don't get me wrong, I love an in-depth story and as much detail as possible but it has to be done right. And this game was done right in everyway possible! Probably the best story I've ever played through in an RPG. Left me wanting more which is nice considering I usually want a break from a title after weeks and weeks of play. I'm still waiting but I have yet to see an RPG in the last 2-3 years as good as this one. |

This game is wretched.
The system is good, the interface is great, the graphics are nice. However, it is still wretched.
Why? Because it has so much lost potential.
It starts off badly, with a generic "escape from dungeon" bit. It gets even worse when the plot gets kicked into cliche overdrive, combining the "Orphan with mysterious power" plot from the first game with an "evil guy who wants to use character for nefarious reason" component.
Second, it is too damn epic. I want a game that is long enough that I don't burn through it in a couple days, but is short enough that I don't get bored. It was way longer than the cut-off point.
Third, way too much combat and "limited" bits. By "Limited" I mean your character's movement has been locked to a small area. This happens how many times in the game? Too many. And how many people have played pen and paper D&D, and fought hundreds of combat encounters in a single campaign? I want Diablo, I'll play Diablo.
The party system blew. I don't want to spend my time micromanaging several characters, one or 2 of whom (at least) have magic.
This game could have been vastly better. However, somewhere along the way, it failed, and became a bloated, tedious mess.
If you want a good RPG, play Fallout, Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, or Arcanum. Don't play this. |

BG2 definitively established the rules for what a "modern" rpg "should" be. I'll explain: 1) Have an open ended play-structure, but give players the sense that they are never lost. Unfortunately, I found the last few chapters in this game drifting towards linearity frustrating. It was like this game was playing like Morrowind and suddenly turning into Final Fantasy. It may not have been my style, but it still worked pretty well plot-wise. I would have liked to have seen the non-linearity hold up through the whole game, though.
2) RTS-style tactical combat. Bioware definately nailed this system of playing for this game. The monsters are varied and tough, so I was definately impressed by the smooth, convincing combat system that Bioware broke new ground with in BG1 and then refined for this game.
3) "Personality" One thing I appreciate in this game is the personality of the NPCs and villains. Bioware took a page from Ultimas in this department. Characters are, for the most part, fleshed out.
4) Beautiful, functionless gameworld. If I can fault BG2 (as with ALL the Bioware games) it's for the lack of a truly interactive game environment. The BG2 gameworld plays like a FPS gameworld- purely fuctional with levers, boxes, keyes etc. Morrowind and the Ultimas had moveable and place-able objects that added countless amounts to the immersion factor. BG2 doesn't- and a lot of times you're just left to stare at the beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds. Which is fine, but it hurts immersion ever so slightly.
5) The Bioware "style". I've played BG1, BG2, Torment, NWN, SWKOR and I find (with Torment being the notable exception) they all sort of have similar broad-appeal in the way their dialogues, plots, quests and overall content are written out. It's at times charming, definately effective, but a little milquetoast and predictable. Only a little, though. BG2 does throw you into really unique and cool situations. Still, there's nothing really disturbing about BG2 (and I personally like when that mood is played up in contrast with less challenging ones). Maybe it's because BG2s mood never plunges into sheer doom and gloom. Maybe it's how the NPCs are always chirpy even in the face of the dark vampire clans in chapter 2. Other games know how to crank up the disturbance factor a lot more effectively and go for better contrast in moods (System Shock 2 comes to mind instantly, but also Wizardry 8 and, to be fair, Torment).
My criticisms only point out my personal preferences for what I'd want in an RpG. For now, though, I'll take BG2s accross the board appeal. In light of current technology and market, no RPG has done so much so well for a single title. In taking its source material and making it into a well-rounded, balanced and engrossing game, Bioware perfected their self-made formula. All good RPGs must be measured against BG2. |

one of the worst POS games ever made. you are constantly bombarded with incredibly babyish and immature lines such as "go for the eyes Boo!" which refers to one of your characters telling his hamster to attack an enemy's eyes.
other asinine lines include:
"this place is just TOO SCARY!"
"is your accent real or have you just been reading too many trashy romance novels?"
...and many, many more that are peppered all throughout this horrible game. you visited stores with babyish names like "Adventurer's Mart"
Baldur's Gate 2 is a farce of an RPG. an RPG made for those who watch Tele-tubbies and Barney the Big Purple Dinosaur on a regular basis. an RPG made for those of a mental capacity between the ages of 2 - 4 years of age.
no serious RPG player will be able to stomach such an asinine, babyish, immature mess that is Baldur's Gate 2. of course all this is supposed to be taking place in a medieval time setting: so most of these asinine lines would have zero chance of ever be said by any real character in that world since those words were not even invented back then
if you are a mature gamer with no stomach for asinine babyish driverl - playing Baldur's Gate 2 will make you vomit. |

The best single-player RPG in a standard heroic fantasy world. A ton of quests, cleverly interacting together, awesome 2D graphics and a good leveling system. Only the strict adherence to the D&D rules prevents me to give a 10. Actually, some D&D rules generate unwanted limitations, because they are not designed for video games initially. |

unbelievably, the first time i played this game i didn't even finish the first chapter, said it sucked and uninstalled it, saying i'd never play it again
then, a few years later, a bit older too, i decided to give it a try, and i couldn't believe the greatest rpg game i've ever played was forgotten for so long by me
no other words needed, simply the BEST RPG GAME EVER MADE FOR PC |

Thiis game is by far the best RPG i have ever played, i have been following the BG series since the beginning and have been impressed time and again but BG2 changed everything.
The new character class's, the complex story, the ability to go almost anywhere and the weapons, spells and items, all these things help make the game incredible..
As to tips for any new players? Try the monk for intense combat orthe sorcerer for mind blowing assault... And if you get the chance try playing it Throne of Bhaal to make the expirience even more intense

I don't get how people can say Morrowind is at the same level as this beautiful game. The Baldur's Gate has everything The Elders Scrolls hasn't: personality, engaging story, tactical combat, intriguing characters and cool quests. In my opinion this is the best CRPG to date and the only game that comes near it is Fallout 2. |

The best RPG, in terms of storyline mixed with dynamic multple character gameplay, that exists today. Graphically it may have dated, but in all other aspects, still the CRPG to beat. |

Greatest game i have been honoured to play...other IE games seemed a bit contrived, like the standard RPG, however the superb story and character immersion have made this game the best i have ever played. |
