The second beta stage of A Tale in the Desert is coming up. Here are the details:At the end of the previous play session, I announced details about the 56-hour Beta#2, which will start on Friday, 1/25/2002, at 12:00 Noon EST. The world state for the Beta#2 cycle will be reset - a "full wipe" that the overwhelming majority voted for in the online poll. For all the details on Beta#2, visit http://www.ataleinthedesert.com/beta2.html. The page contains a quick signup form, however, if you're receiving this email there's no need to sign up again.
I promised at least two short additional sessions before Beta#2. We're going to do them on consecutive days:
Thursday, 1/17/2002 from 12:00 Noon EST until 4:00PM (EST is GMT-0500)
Friday, 1/18/2002 from 6:00PM EST until 8:00PM
The Beta#1 cycle has had all sorts of player-driven plot twists: The class laws and subsequent repeal early on, the sudden split of Scholars of Thoth away from Guardians of the Oasis, Toren's single-handed discovery of Battering Ram Construction, Vodalus's mastery of the Test of Mentorship.
We saw the game transform from an almost purely cooperative community, to a fairly competitive one with real trade and commerce. And most of all, we saw players developing small outposts to build the physical goods needed to advance Egyptian society with the hope of perfecting the Seven Disciplines of Man.
Friday's session will end with an unusual sort of ceremony, in which two people will be honored with special titles that will carry over into Beta#2. Arrive at the Mountain market, 30 minutes before the end of the session, with as much goods as you can carry. Bring the rarest, widest ranging collection that you can. I'll explain more once we are all gathered.
One last thing: Many of you have met Tchrin in-game. He is working on a really interesting project: A map showing all the real-life locations of ATITD players. For those that have not yet done so, send him an email with your character name, country, state, and major city that you are closest to. His email is tchrin@tchrin.net.
Software for A Tale in the Desert is available on http://www.ataleinthedesert.com under "Downloads".
