The Scrying Room has a guide to the interface of Pool of Radiance - Ruins of Myth Drannor. The games should be on the shelves any day now, so this comes in very handy. Here's a snippit:

So first things first. That thing in the upper-left corner of any screenshot that shows combat. You’re probably wondering what it is. Well, that’s the initiative marker. What it does is that it informs you of the order that the combat events will take place in. From it, you can see who goes before whom, where the monster’s turn is, etc. Initiative is predetermined at the beginning of combat. Each combat can/will have a different initiative order, but the order will stay the same for the whole combat session. Initiative can only change if things such as death (yours or a monster’s), some form of Paralysis, or delay actions occur (there are a couple of other ways too). Your characters will be represented by the same color that appears on the circles under their feet; this color also corresponds to their health bars in the lower right. Monsters will always have that Monster Icon® and a single monster icon can represent multiple monsters. So, in a nutshell, this part of the interface tells you the order combat will occur in. It will only show up during combat and there is nothing you can do with it except stare at it.
