Okratas has penned an article on MMO design with the mouth-watering title of Adjusting Stimuli to Solve Problems. Hooked yet? Here's a clip:
Keeping customers of an MMORG happy is a quest in and of itself. The simple approach is to listen to the problems of players, and then attempt to solve it. The best approach is to examine the environment the player is interacting in, determine the type of stimuli, assess for any role function changes, and then address the stimuli, and the role function problems together.

Players are constantly interacting with a changing environment. This environment extends out of the game onto official message boards, and to customer support interactions. Unfortunately, not every decision made by developers, not every customer service contact, and not every public relations interaction is a positive one. The key to creating positive interactions and to promoting positive change in the community is by managing the stimuli potential customers and players receive.
