A new interview with pete Tyson about Dragon Empires has been posted at RPGVault. It deals with the two new races that have been announced recently:
Jonric: In overview, how will the class system work, how will it tie in with the skills system, and what restrictions will it impose? To what extent will classes affect the skills you can learn as well ask how quickly and how you can advance them?

Peter Tyson: Every character has three primary skills and up to six secondary skills (three specific to your class and three role-based skills you can develop if you want). Each race has five classes, and when you create your character, you pick which of your class' three primary skills is to be your 'major', 'secondary' and 'tertiary' skill; you pick the order in which they will develop. When it comes to secondary skills, as you develop, you can spend points on whichever secondary skills you want to increase. Players chose to which level they take what skill, and if they make a mistake in either primary or secondary skill development, they can see an NPC to change their points spent.

Furthermore, we're also looking at a system whereby once you have developed one character to a certain level (we will decide in beta), you will unlock a class that has no restriction on choice of primary and secondary skills. This 'freeform' class will be a lot of fun for our more experienced players who want to try some unusual combination of skills.

I should note here that skills are only part of character development. Crafting, for example, doesn't feature as a class skill and is entirely developed through a series of quests. We like to have alternate advancement routes and methods and will continue to add to them post-live, I expect.
