Computer & Video Games conducted an interview with Volker Wertich, lead designer of Spellforce - The Order of Dawn. Here's an excerpt:
Q: Spellforce is a mixture of RTS and RPG. Why did you decide to combine the two genres? What benefits does it bring?
Wertich: The main part of SpellForce is an RTS game, but the RPG elements will certainly keep the player captivated. Having an avatar - a virtual alter ego in the game you can freely choose (warrior, white magician, black magician, rouge etc.) - gives you a much better opportunity to become more involved in the game and story than just commanding nameless and faceless armies.
Besides, the avatar gives the game a deeper, more tactical component. In SpellForce you no longer sit and watch the battles praying for a good result - you can actively influence them. If for example you have trained your avatar to become strong and powerful in the art of elemental magic, you can support your armies during battles by casting rains of fire on enemies.
While in most RTS games you start each new map with only a few workers, in SpellForce you can advance through the game with your main character to build up stronger armies more efficiently. You can also find plans to create new types of buildings and runes to summon more effective workers or powerful heroes and new types of spells or better equipment. |
