I can almost understand why the original System Shock got buried. It came out just as a flood of DOOM clones were hitting the shelves, it was poorly marketed as a first-person shooter (which it really wasn't), and the stellar reviews were hidden by other good to great games that looked similar in screenshots. To this day SHODAN remains one of the gold standards for both voice acting and brilliant game writing, and one of the greatest villains to ever grace a video game. Perhaps it was just too ahead of its time to be truly appreciated.
