GamePen is the next in line to preview Heroes of Might & Magic 4. Four pages long, some nice shots and an in depth view at the game. Kudos to our reader El Chorizo for pointing us at this one - this snippet is dedicacted to him, then *g*:

You upgrade towns, but you have to choose between third level and higher of that town type. For example, in the Life town, you have to choose between either Mages or Golems. You can’t build both – it’s one branch or the other. There are a ton of new structures, too. In the Might town, the Stronghold, there is the Magic Dampener, which gives every hero of the Stronghold player 10% magic resistance, cumulatively. That is, if you have three towns with the Dampener, you have a 30% resistance. Every town has such special structures to underline that town’s theme and strength. Stronghold heroes now cannot do magic. Not a bit. In Heroes III, even Stronghold heroes could have magic, and the Stronghold had at least up to 3rd level magic guilds. (Note: I’d reported earlier that you could build as much as you like, provided you have the resources. That has changed: it has returned to the old one-building-per-day limitation.)

Every magic aligned town can now build two libraries of the adjacent magic as well – Life, for example, can build the main magic tower, plus two libraries of Order and Nature. Even better – those libraries can eventually get fifth level spells of that magic, too! One of the more intriguing statements in the manual is that you can recruit creatures in your allies’ town. It’ll be interesting to see if this remains a feature in the final version (I’m sure you’ll have to get permission first from the town’s owner!)
