Digital Entertainment had a chance for a hands on demonstration of Final Fantasy XII recently and had this to say: In the demo, you get a chance to battle a rockeater, which is basically a T-Rex-style creature, as well as a scorpion-like creature. Areas are somewhat small, but full of non-boss enemies as well; longtime FFT followers will recognize familiar enemies with a high-powered, FFXII makeover, such as the orange balls of fire from the Tactics series, which return but looking far cooler than ever before, though their strategies and behaviors as enemies will be familiar. The game looks slick and smooth, nearly a PS2.5-style look, which is probably what has led some gamers to speculate that the big delays in Final Fantasy XII are due to the game being moved up to the PS3; that is now clearly not the case, as the demo is running on PS2 hardware and looking at least as good as any of the other top PS2 eye candy titles of the past year, including Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Resident Evil 4 and Indigo Prophecy. FFXII is still a ways off, but as this very limited demo demonstrates, even using the new action-style battle system, this is still the Final Fantasy we all know and love. What a great holiday gift!
