CGO has posted a lukewarm review of Deus Ex 2, summing it up to a mere 76% and this conclusion which speaks out what every fan of part 1 is feeling:
In the end, I’m utterly disappointed by Invisible War. And nothing makes me madder than knowing what a masterpiece it could have been, if it was developed only for the PC (as it should have been in the first place) and THEN ported to XBOX. However, Eidos decided that the console market was a too bigger opportunity to miss, and decided to simplify the game, in order to make it more accessible to console owners. And you can clearly see this when you compare the very first screenshots released by ISA with the present ones, where you will see that at the beginning of the game’s development, the interface was similar to the one in DX1 and the graphics looked better. The bottom line? Invisible War is NOT a bad game and it’s certainly worth a look, but it doesn’t rise up to the standards set by its predecessor, and it’s WAY below the fans expectations and certainly a LONG way from what it was intended to be in the first place: a worthy sequel for Deus Ex. And me? I’m left with only the hope that Thief 3 will not suffer the same fate as IW, that ISA will manage to finish Deus Ex 3 some time in the future and regain the prestige lost in front of its fans and make a game worthy of the Deus Ex name.
