Jaako Peltonen, Project leader of this U4 remake, has posted the latest installment of his developer diary. "So much to tell, so little space" is the title, and because this is true for RPGDot as well, here's only a small snippit:
One of the challenges in making an absorbing, fun game is to make it accessible and easy to learn for players. A large part of how well a game plays is due to its interface.
Role-playing games are an especially good example of the importance of good interface design: there is often a multitude of facts the player needs to be aware of, such as character health, passing time, what each character is doing, usable items, as well as any interface-specific selections/choices currently in effect. Moreover, the player often has a great number of ways to affect the game world: walking around, talking to creatures, combat, using items in the party's inventory, casting spells, using objects that are part of the game world (like opening doors). |
