RPG Vault has interviewed DAoC: Trials of Atlantis Executive Producer, Matt Firor:
Jonric: What are your high-level goals, especially in terms of enhancing the overall Dark Age of Camelot gameplay experience? And what's the significance of the word Trials in the title? Does it refer to actual tests?

Matt Firor: We want to give players the thrill of exploring the new areas and fighting new monsters with the added dimension of underwater and boats added.

The backstory of Atlantis is that the Atlanteans were a very powerful culture, especially with different types of magic. Eventually, they progressed to the point where they forecast their own demise in a cataclysmic natural event. The Atlanteans knew that at some point, future civilizations would find their islands and exploit their knowledge of magic. So, in order to prove these future cultures worthy, the Atlanteans built a series of tests into their geography, which players must overcome in order to be granted insight into Atlantean power. These tests are the "Trials" of the Trials of Atlantis. There are nine of them, and each confers a new Master Level to the player, along with a new spell or ability.
