Since the PvP component in Earth & Beyond was officially announced yesterday, Gamespy posted an interview with David Yee, lead designer on the project, about this new feature. This is a part of it:
GameSpy: Why did you opt for team-based PvP as opposed to single-player PVP? In your view what's the advantage of focusing on team play?
David Yee: The individual archetypes are balanced for Player vs. Environment (PvE), meaning the characters were balanced for team work in the universe. That being said, a Progen Warrior was balanced to be the best head-to-head warrior in the game in terms of damage output, damage absorption, and straight forward, slug-it-out combat.
In practice, it is nearly impossible for a Jenquai Explorer (our weakest fighting archetype) to defeat a Progen Warrior in head-to-head combat, unless the Jenquai is really, really good, and the Progen is really, really bad. In a single-player versus single-player form of PvP, or classical dueling solution, it would be inevitable that one archetype would usually win. The game is fundamentally setup that way. By making it team-based PvP, we allow our players to develop cross archetype strategies and to put together more balanced teams for the way they participate in the games. |
