The newly-launched Wish.Stratics has an interview with Mutable Realms President, Marc Laukien:What is the difference between a MMORPG and an UMMORPG?
Marc Laukien: At present, we see MMORPGs developing in two different directions.
The first is to make the world smaller, and to have fewer players simultaneously in the game. In addition to the "zoning", the so-called "instancing" is becoming typical for these games, such as creating a temporary dungeon instance for groups of players.
Wish goes in the exact opposite direction: We try to have one large world, with huge dungeons, cities, and play areas, without any zoning, and most definitely with no instancing. Therefore we call Wish an "Ultra Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game", with emphasis not only on the "Ultra", but also on "Role Playing". Many MMORPGs are not much about Role Playing these days, but much more about power-leveling and running through pre-defined quests.
Because of Wish's unique one-world approach, it is possible to have a dedicated live content team, which starts events in the world, such as an invasion of a town, the hunt for rare items, or other story-driven events for which the outcome will be determined by our players. |
