A new team letter has been published at the official site for Star Wars: Galaxies. This time, Programmer Austin Appleby talks about his career and his life:
For reasons that I still don't understand, I decided to enroll at UT as a Chemical Engineering major. It was extremely boring - chemistry and physics are cool and all, but I just wasn't that fascinated by figuring out how quickly some random fluid would flow through some random pipe. I kept tinkering with my toy graphics engines on the side, and by the time I'd decided that I _really_ didn't want to be designing chemical reactors for a living I had put together a few more spiffy 3d demos including a partially-functional Descent-like engine.
After a series of unfortunate circumstances involving scholarships and FAFSA and other college-tuition-money-related issues, I found myself reading through the "Help Wanted" ads in the paper. Down at the bottom of the page I noticed a little ad with cartoon characters on it - it was a small console game company here in town, and they were hiring entry-level programmers! I took all the demos I'd been working on, cleaned them up, and sent them off along with a copy of my (rather empty) resume. Lo and behold, I got the job. |
