RPGDot 2003 Awards: Best MMORPG Expansion

The last couple of weeks you could vote for the best RPGs and MMORPGs that have been released in 2003. Not us but you the player decide who receives the RPGDot 2003 Awards in the various categories. We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games of 2003.

Best MMORPG Expansion
Most good games get an expansion, unfortunately some bad games get them too. But here we have only room for the best as chosen by our visitors.

The winner: Dark Age of Camelot: Trials of Atlantis
While Shadowlands added a good deal of love to Anarchy Online, Trials of Atlantis substantially improved one of the most popular fantasy MMOGs out there right now...and it did it with style. Added zones, some of them underwater, new loot, new monsters, and a shiny graphics upgrade were all a part of the ToA package. Questing for artifacts is also a huge addition to the game, giving higher end players some meaty content to sink their teeth into. I personally am a big fan of the SpeedTree system added into the game. Such happy trees. If you're a DAoC player, you deserve the improvements this expansion adds to the game.

Runner Up: Anarchy Online: Shadowlands
Who would have thought two years ago that one day Anarchy Online would come out with an expansion? Better yet, who would have thought that it would be considered among the best expansions of the year when it did? AO certainly is risen from the ashes, and Shadowlands proves that with persistence the game could become better than it was in its first year. Adding new territories to explore and new classes to try out, Shadowlands showed us that AO isn't all that bad anymore. In fact, it's pretty good! With graphics that still can rival most of the popular games that have recently come out, Shadowlands gives a new breath to AO, and that's exactly what the game needed.

Second Runner Up: EverQuest - Lost Dungeons of Norrath
An established, tried and true product is a good thing. Keeping it alive with quality expansions is quite another matter, and Lost dungeons of Norrath has proven once again that it's possible. Adding plenty of new dungeons, 5 new continents to explore, and a plethora of new items is enough to please even the most experienced adventurer. Making it to the top of the list of the year's best is solid proof of that!
