Over at Gamespy, you can find volume 9 of their Etherlords Developer Diary by Nival's Andrey Emelyanenko:

Over the past three weeks we conducted a series of play tests. Around four players at a time, most of them not pros, came to our office and played the game from the start, each of them being supervised by a member of the developer team. Despite all our worries, players got quite comfortable in the game almost at once, especially on the adventure screen. Frankly speaking, I expected that we would have some tough time suppressing uncontrollable roars of laughter watching them play, but I must admit that watching Evil Islands play tests were far more exciting. I cannot remember many funny things about Etherlords play tests.
