Disciples 1 - Sacred Lands: 7/10 points |
Having played HOMM for years, it was refreshing to try a similar system that had some interesting variations on the old HOMM system. In some ways, this game reminds me of Ogre Battle, but in all I prefer Disciples. |
Heroes of Might & Magic: 8/10 points |
When looking at the new Heroes products, I can't help but wonder if, some day, the (now diminishing) staff of New World Computing will try to go back to the chess-like elegance and simplicity of their first title, Heroes of Might and Magic (I). Even after having played II and III, I still find myself playing the first installment every once in a while. I would love to see an updated HOMM, with marketplaces and more creatures, keeping the fine balance and warmth (a warmth that is lacking in these rotoscoped creatures of III and IV, in my opinion) that keeps me coming back. |
Heroes of Might & Magic - Quest for the DragonBone Staff: 6/10 points |
I thought "cool! a heroes for the PS2!" but then I read about it. If you love King's Bounty, the precursor to the Heroes of Might and Magic series, this is what you're getting. Gnomes are replaced by lizardmen, and there are a few other tweaks, but there were MANY things they could have done to enhance the basic King's Bounty engine. A lot of the annoying quirks remain. Check out King's Bounty first, then imagine it with great graphics and sound, and THEN decide if you want it or not. |
Heroes of Might & Magic 2 - Succession Wars: 7/10 points |
The classic of the Heroes line, it still seems to me to be heavily in favor of magic users. The balance in the first Heroes installment seems to be diminished here. BUT, all the new features, new monsters, the ability to upgrade, and the beautiful music make up for this. Though I like the balance of the first one, this title is a step forward in other ways. |
