A nice 9/10 is the result of a review of Disciples 2 - Dark Prophecy at Zen Gamer. Here's an excerpt:
Here's another neat thing that Strategy First did. Instead of having huge armies which get slowly depleted as you fight enemies, you have a small army of 3 units (to start with) accompanying each leader, thus behaving somewhat like a small RPG party. Your leader is usually the most powerful unit, and s/he is the one who gets special abilities like artifact use, orb lore or maybe simply increased leadership (ability to command more troops). Each of your units gains experience, has a position in your vanguard (front or back row), does not vanish when it gets killed; instead, its essence hangs around and can be resurrected either in a Temple (one must be build in a friendly city), or with the use of a Life Potion. Dead units get no experience, of course. Another clever addition is the loss of mobility when the party leader dies; reflecting the loss of troop morale (your movement points are reduced do 25%-50% of your normal mobility).
To improve your units without engaging the enemy head-on, you had to make your way across your territorial borderlands and locate and defeat neutral parties, which in the original Disciples did not do much other than divulge some information when defeated or mutter something about revenge. Other than that they were fixed, stationary, "experience stations" or "blockades" - obviously strong units blocking a single passage into a more interesting part of the land. While useful, they seemed to be a bit TOO stationary to be interesting, and perhaps one of the few somewhat underdeveloped game devices in the first Disciples game. |
