The AO Live Team has posted the latest update dealing with lag/bad frame-rate, loss of quality levels in implants and weapons, and the Rubi-Ka 2 dimension:
The events that have been run lately have stressed the lag-like problems you experience in big cities and when you move through the Whompas and Grid. In my interview with MMORPG earlier this week I answered a question about this:
‘The problem is not lag, really - it's low frame-rate, or often just choppy frame-rate. A lot of it is a result of having to load a lot of resources from the disk. We are working on reducing the amount of data that needs to be loaded, as well as making the loading smoother. Currently, you can get into a situation where several characters come into view at the same time, and all their resources are loaded. That will result in a few very noticeable jerks. Add to that, the low frame-rate usually confuses the camera trying to follow you, and it makes the situation rather unpleasant.
We will attack this in two ways: The first, and most noticeable way is to decrease the load from the disk. There's some stuff we can't avoid to load, but we have room for optimisation here. One was in the last client patch, and it has already improved speed in cities. The other thing we're pursuing is that we try to spread out the loading over more frames, thus avoiding the jerkiness. The first results from this look really promising.’
Another problem a lot of players experience is loss of quality level in implants and weapons. The team has been investigating the problem and discovered why it happens. The problem is in the client, not the database or the server. That is why zoning is a work-around for this problem. When the character zones, the data on the client is synchronised with the server and everything is working again. The team is working on fixing the bug.
Dimension 2 has been running smoothly for a while. The citizens of Rubi-Ka 2 are welcoming new colonists. This is still a pioneer world with good space for everybody. If you'd like to meet new people, try to start a new character on Rubi-Ka 2.
