Casey Hudson, the game's producer and project director, and Teresa Cotesta, communications coordinator at BioWare were partners in a Star Wars: KotOR interview at Gamesradar. Here's a bit from that one:
How difficult is it working within the confines of the Star Wars universe and staying true to it? How closely do you have to have to work with LucasArts and how much leeway do they give you?

Teresa: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is based 4000 years before the films, so in a way this gives us the freedom to explore a lot of potential story elements, planets and characters, while still staying true to the look and feel of the Star Wars universe. In terms of creative freedom, LucasArts has been very good to work with - we generated all of the story, characters and concepts for the art in the game, and they have provided many useful suggestions which we incorporate into the game as we receive them. Of course, we're always respectful of the back story of Star Wars and perhaps that's why we've gotten on so well with LucasArts - we're definitely aware of the huge responsibility to Star Wars fans that the first role-playing game in that universe must maintain.
