Art of Gaming reviewed Throne of Darkness and rated it 86%:

On the different floors of the castle, you run into your three colleagues, who will automatically go to the Daimo, which is also where you can recover from your wounds, or be risen from the dead if necessary. The only thing it takes is Ki. It compares to the Mana from Diablo, also bluishly colored, and you get it by just waiting. Plenty of bottles of Ki are to be found around you, but it’s cheaper to let time heal your wounds (and we all know time heals all wounds, wisdom on a gamesite... who'd have guessed ?). The thing that distinguishes ToD from other similar games, is its speed. Your magical link to the Daimo makes sure no running around across Japan is needed; by pressing the right buttons your character is swooshed back to safety with the Daimo. Or the other way around: from the Daimo back to battle position. If, for example, you replace an almost dead samurai in combat with a fresh one – by swooshing back and forth – you have the possibility of using your seven fellows in one fight. And trust me, you’re gonna need it. Seldom the enemy will come alone, sometimes there can be up to fifteen in one party..
