Over at Dark Age of Camelot Alert, you can find an interview with Mythic Entertainment’s Lori Silva. Here's a question about being a woman in the gaming industry:
As one of the few women in the industry to break the "glass ceiling" of being in a very public, (assumingly) powerful position, Roberta Williams aside, how do you perceive the role of women changing/growing in the industry as "power players" instead of merely as coders, CS, etc?
Until recently, it was extremely unusual to see open female interest in mainstream computer gaming. Sure, there have always been a few, but they were outside the norm. Because of that, it had often been difficult for a women (as a group) to not only break the "glass ceiling," but to simply be taken seriously, whether it was in production and development or as a member of one of the gaming communities.
Today, it is more common to see open female interest in the gaming industry. As a result, I believe you will see more self-confidence from the women who would like to further their careers in game production. You will probably also see a new level of respect coming from some of their male counterparts that may not have been present before, respect that indicates a significant amount of trust and confidence that is shared between the two genders. |
