Rich "Bo Shek" Vogel, Executive Producer of Sony Online Entertainment's / Verant's highly anticipated Star Wars MMORPG has -after a long silence- posted a progress report to the official Star Wars: Galaxies boards:

    Hey everyone,
It’s been quite some time since I last posted on here. I have been on vacation in Ireland and the UK - spent many days in Dublin and London. Now that I am back I’d thought it would be a good time to catch you up on what we are doing.

We went to E3 with the hope of introducing the game to a few select people as a sneak preview, but by the end of the day we had a crowd of over 70 people outside the door wanting to get a glimpse of the game. This took us by complete surprise and we enjoyed the attention - but now we have to build a game. And believe me, I am impatient as you are…I want to play Galaxies too!

So what’s the next step? Our next big milestone will be our First Playable. Our entire team is focused on this milestone, from our artists building terrain and environmental assets, to our designers making fun stuff to do on those planets, to our programmers getting the base game systems in place to make it all work!

We are currently working on finishing the base terrain for Naboo and three more planets are now in the process of terrain generation. Our world builders will be taking these terrains and putting quests and events on them. We call these Theme Parks, because it feels a lot like a ride at an amusement park. These quests and events are pre-scripted to run within certain parameters, and they generally include some very recognizable Star Wars elements (such as getting a mission from Jabba the Hutt). We will reveal more about these theme parks as we get closer to completing our first planet.

The art team is also working hard to get first-pass assets to the world builders. They are starting to create the buildings and objects that will go into the each plane and our planets are huge, and we’re going to need a lot of content to put on them! This includes cities, roads, and points of interest in the wilderness. It is exciting to see some of that starting to come together.

The character team is working on finalizing the eight playable species and creatures for SWG. We want to make sure the motions on our species are as realistic as possible, so we’re using motion capture for all 8 playable species. We’ve put a lot of thought into this process, and we’re working hard to make the player motions immersive. Our first two hundred motions will all be locomotion (running, walking, sprinting, etc.) and emotes (waving, shrugging, bowing, etc.). Later, once we’re ready for some of the more exciting work, we’ll capture our combat moves. Hopefully, we’ll secure some familiar Star Wars talent for that shoot. I’ll keep you up to date on our progress.

Finally, our scripting language has been incorporated into the engine and we will soon be ready to go full-speed into implementing our core game systems. We are almost ready to start putting a game behind these amazingly detailed environments. Our goal is to get the core systems in the game as soon as possible to give us plenty of time to play test and make this game fun to play. Here again, I’ll keep you update on our progress.

Have a great 4th, stay safe, and I’ll give you another update in a few weeks.

    Rich Vogel
    Executive Producer
    Star Wars Galaxies
