RPGDot 2003 Awards: Most Anticipated MMORPG
The MMORPGDot Team, 2004-01-14

The last couple of weeks you could vote for the best RPGs and MMORPGs that have been released in 2003. Not us but you the player decide who receives the RPGDot 2003 Awards in the various categories. We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games of 2003.

Most Anticipated MMORPG

In 2004 there will several MMORPG's that will see the light of day. These are the three that are anticipated most by you, the voters.

The winner: World of Warcraft
Blizzard is known for the quality of its products. Their franchise names alone are synonymous with quality in PC gaming. And so, it is without surprise that WoW finds itself on the top of the list of most anticipated MMOPRGs for this year. The quality of the Warcraft strategy games is a good basis to build an online game on, and one can only hope that it will translate well. Given Blizzard's history, we should be assured of having a stable, well balanced product, which would be a first in the genre's history. Should we expect any less? History advises us that we shouldn't expect as much, but we're hoping that we'll be pleasantly surprised. Now all that's left for us is to hope that WoW will really be coming out this year.

Runner Up: Middle-Earth Online
How can we not expect this game with any great anticipation? In the last three years we have been treated to one of the best cinematic experiences of our time, and now there's a whole new generation waiting in line to be able to walk in the footsteps of the fellowship of the Ring. But sometimes anticipation is a dangerous thing, very much like the Ring in Tolkien's books itself! It could be very easy to fall pray to the hype that will grow around this title. But we certainly have reason to be hopeful. The game is being developed by an experienced studio, the team seems to be well aware of the lore they have to work with, and they seem bent on offering us the possibility of living a good life in Middle Earth. But in the wise words of good old uncle Bilbo: "if you don't keep your feet, there's no telling where you'll be swept off to!" Let's just hope they don't screw this up!

Second Runner Up: Everquest 2
Let's see. Everquest is the most popular online game in the history of the genre. It still is to this day. I guess it's only natural then that its sequel would be as anticipated as it is! Of course by now players don't want the same thing with a new graphical engine, so we're hoping that is not what will be offered. But I guess that even if it was the case it would still make for a decent game, if only because there are so many people playing it right now. Still, in a world where players complain about the stagnant state of MMORPGs, it would be surprising to see a rehashed game. Everquest 2 promises much, and we certainly all hope it will deliver.
